Proud Plascon and Mica initiative donates R300 000 and counting to Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital
For every limited-edition Ndebele-patterned bucket of Plascon paint sold through Mica, a portion of the proceeds goes to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital
(NMCH) to provide medical care for South African children in need. So far, R300 000 has been donated to NMCH through the campaign, with the amount due to rise as paint sales climb.
Mica and Plascon presented their first joint cheque to NMCH on 29 March 2024 and continue to raise funds for this important institution. NMCH in Parktown, Johannesburg, is a world-class specialist paediatric hospital founded by Nelson Mandela in 1995 with a mandate to transform the way society treats its youth. Its strategy has always been to give children the necessary treatment regardless of their ability to pay. Built entirely on donations, NMCH continues to rely on this support to continue its work.
Popular hardware store Mica in partnership with long-term brand partner and household name, Plascon, identified the hospital as the campaign recipient because serving the community is integral to the business operations of both. Mica challenged Plascon to produce a special product for a campaign to generate extra proceeds dedicated to the hospital. Plascon is one of Mica’s founding suppliers and the existing relationship laid a basis of trust that made it a natural fit for this initiative.
Plascon was briefed to develop a limited-edition paint bucket which is decorated with Ndebeleinspired patterns and a ‘Mica Proudly Local’ stamp. The bucket contains 20 litres of matt PVA paint that is suitable for indoor and outdoor use. For every campaign bucket sold in one of Mica’s 160 national stores, Plascon donates a portion of the profits to NMCH.
‘We’ve seen exceptional sales of this product. Customers have really responded positively to the product and the purpose behind it. We’re very fortunate to work with Plascon on this initiative.’ says Jaco Hattingh, Managing Director of Mica LRB.
Mica prides itself on running community hardware stores that are on a first-name basis with their customers. Giving back has been an essential aspect of Mica’s business identity since its 1983 inception, and remains integral to its 2024 operations.
Established more than 130 years ago, Plascon has a long history of community involvement. ‘We acknowledge that healthy societies, communities, labour forces and environments provide the necessary foundation for a healthy business. As such, we are interdependent on the societies and environments in which we operate. We are thankful to be able to collaborate with Mica in this way,’ says Kristel Dreyer, Brand Marketing Manager at Plascon.
Consumers and trade customers who are keen to get involved and support NMCH while uplifting their homes, properties and projects, should head to their nearest Mica in search of the vibrant limited-edition 20L paint bucket that is brightening up children’s lives.
